“Hi dad, Jenna, and Cal. I know you guys hate me so much by now. I understand that, considering everything that has happened. I had to make this voice message; I doubt you would want to receive my call. I’m pregnant, three months along. I just couldn’t keep it a secret any longer. I’m not asking for anything; maybe I deserve all that I’m going through. But at least, I let you know. Bye.” The next two months found me sitting on my mother’s grave, reflecting on my life, and how I ended pregnant with my step brother’s child.

I was laying on my bed, trying to catch some sleep. I turned to face the wall. Grandma says taking a nap during the day is good for my baby’s health. I thought that worked for me, I was getting so tired of late.

“April,” I felt a thick palm caress my stomach. It couldn’t be grandma. That voice, soft and deep, crispy when whispering. I could never forget it.

“Cal, you are here.” I warily turned to meet his charming smile.

“You look so cute pregnant.” His hands caressed my face, and neck.

“I don’t believe I’m seeing you right now, how did you get in?”

“Your grandma let me in. She must be very kind.” I stared at his face.

“What! You thought I would leave you alone? Come on, we are in this together.”

“That day, you ran away and left me alone.” The memories of my last day in Los Angeles hit my mind.

“I did not. That morning I went to face that maniac. I had to shut her down, I went to see my solicitor to stop her from doing anymore damage. I came back to find that silly voice message. Why did you do that?”

“I was so scared, so ashamed. I couldn’t think straight.”

He caressed my hair; he was so calm. “I’m here now. I promise you will never have to run away from me again. I will take care of you and my baby.” I was happy. I might have been wrong about him. I thought he was a hit and run type of guy.

“What about my dad and Jenna?”

“Oh, they will get over it. They are glad to be grandparents.” That got us laughing. “They will be here soon.” I gasped; that sounded scary. But at least the worst part was over. I watched him rub my belly with such affection even though it was still flat. I had him.....but I wondered for how long.....
